African Americans and the Arts
February is Black History Month and a time to celebrate Black contributions to society. The theme for 2024 is African Americans and the Arts. African American art and culture is woven into the fabric of American society and culture. “African American art is infused with African, Caribbean, and the Black American lived experiences. In the fields of visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary and other forms of cultural expression, the African American influence has been paramount” (ASALH). South Carolina, where the NACA office is located, is home to Jonathan Green. Green is an internationally acclaimed artist known for “capturing the positive aspects of American and African American Southern cultures, history, and traditions” (jonathangreenstudios.com). The founder of modern jazz, Dizzy Gillespie, was born in South Carolina in 1917.
